G7: Concept Development 1/10/12
- In this lesson we reviewed our footage from our green screen parctice shoot and the Brighton trip. We thought about difficulties that had occoured during these shoots and how we could improve on the actual shoot.
- We used Premiere to create short videos from the footage that we can watch when thinking about the shots we are going to use in our real music video.
- We thought about the props, lighting and locations that we are going to use in our shoot. We also thought about how the characters and band would dress in the video. When choosing the song, we looked at generic conventions for indie music videos and based our band's costumes on what we found out at this time.

G7: Brighton Trip
On 28/09/12 we went on a trip to Brighton to practice filming in similar locations to those we are planning to film in. We used locations such as a park, the beach, the lanes and a restaurant. We also practiced different types of shots such as a 360 degree pan, an arc shot, and a range of angles and shot sizes.
- As it was windy on the day, we found it difficult to keep the camera steady when using the handi-cam frame. If this problem occours on our real shoot, we will try to use a tri-pod as much as possible. The rain also meant that it was difficult to film some outdoors shots.

- We also noticed that the shot inside a restaurant didn't look as good as our outside shots because of the background, colours and lighting. Therefore, we will try to do as much of the filming in outdoor locations other than the shots in the studio.
- We thought about how we are planning to film our music video and practiced some shots we are planning to include. For example, we used the handi-cam frame to follow the character from the video and took a 30 second long static shot of a character from across the road which we then sped up.
- We think this was a good practice for our real shoot as we were able to see what techniques we could replicate or alter when we film our music video. We were also able to practice some editing techniques when reviewing the footage on Premiere, for example the sped up and slowed down shots and the two shot filmed in the resaurant.
G7: Pre-Production and Brighton Planning
Costume
Props
The props that we are most likely to use are a Guitar, a Bass and a Drum kit, as well as a microphone or two. We shall pretend to use some amplifiers and use some jack leads for the guitars.

Brighton Trip Planning
We are planning to use conventional modern clothing such as a striped t-shirt, jeans and a hooded jumper for the male protagonist and a similar feminine equivalent for the female protagonist.

Lighting
The lighting will be faded and dark for the majority of the video, with a blue filter on certain scenes to enhance the feeling of depression and poor relations between the couple.
We are planning to film inside a house, and outside at a park or wooded area. The wooded areas we have come up with include Bedgebury Pinetum as one of the options.
- After spending time in the Drama Studio practicing shots we want to include in the performance section of the video. We edited the footage to see which shots we wanted to include and what we needed to work on or practice.
- We spent time today thinking about what we will do on our trip to Brighton. We decided that we were going to spend the time practicing shots we are planning to include in our music video including a range of different shot sizes and angles.
- We were given a list of shots to practice on the trip and using the call sheet, we decided how we would film each shot to make it relevent to shots we wanted to include in our music video. We also thought about risks we might encounter during the shoot and what we could do to ensure that the equiptment and ourselves would remain safe.
- The call sheet also gave us some more ideas of the loactions and types of shots we would want to film in Brighton. We looked online for appropriate locations around Brighton that we plan to ues on the trip.
G7: Drama Studio Reccie
- In preperation for our filming we undertook a reccie in the studio where we are planning on filming part of our music video.
- As we are planning to film our performance in the studio, we practiced some shots we are going to use, such as a range of CUs, Mid Shots and Long Shots. As we did not have the entire band available for the practice shoot, we practiced these shots using our guitarist.
These are some of the shots we fimed in this session:
- After reviewing our footage, we noticed that we will need to practice using the tracking to ensure that our shots are smooth. This may require us moving the camera slower to make sure that the speed does not change. This is important as we may decided to use a slower cutting rate in the performance of our video and it would be noticable if the shots were not steady.
- We also shot some close up shots of the guitar from varying positions, such as a low angle shot from the base of the guitar and a high angle shot from the top. Although we were happy with these shots, we realised that if the guitar moved a lot and the shot size emphasised this. However, we noticed that these types of shots are usually shown very short amount of time so it would be possible to only show good parts of the shots if we encounter this problem on our real shoot. However, we will still try to practice this shoot to ensure that it is of a good quiality.
- We will think about how we will have to alter some of the shots we practiced when shooting with a whole band and whether we will do anything differently.
- We will try to practice shooting with an entire band before our film shoot to ensure that we are prepared for any problems we might encounter with a different set up.
- As we only had a guitarist for our shoot, we will also try to practice some shots of the drummer that we will use in our final piece. We have thought about the different types of shots often used and looked at how drummers are often filmed in music videos and will try to film some similar shots as well as coming up with some original ideas ourselves.
- We are also going to think about the lighting we are going to use in the studio to create a realistic looking performance.
