Analysis and Review:
- In creating my music festival poster in Photoshop, their were a few processes I went through in order to establish the final product for Mallorca Rocks, an annual event that takes place over the summer months, in Magaluf, for the 2012 season.
- To begin with, after researching some of the official products produced for the event this year, I found that on all forms of media, the title of the event as well as line ups were a key aspect in their design; Whilst considering this, I found a desired background that I wanted to use in my production which look both aesthetically please yet as the same time, looked rather simplistic and elegant. However the first thing I went about doing was resizing, rotating and cropping the image to the desired look, in this case, set for an A4 sheet. As well as this, using the clone stamp tool, I exaggerated the wider black areas in order to leave no unusual white space.
- After doing this, I began upon the second layer of my poster. I chose to use a close up of a large amplifier as I felt that this was symbolic of the music poster. I then, correctly proportioned the image, and overlaid the image using the overlay tool. In addition to this, I looked at what I could do with the last layer, deciding upon altering the opacity to modify how vivid the layer of the speakers appeared through the original layer.
- After this, I began work on the line-up for the years event. I chose to position the line-up so that it surrounded the focus point of the image, being the strands of glowing light as it was aesthetically pleasing, as well as drawing attention to the artists who would be featured. When positioning the artists, I placed an oval over the top of the original layers to ensure the forthcoming layers were aligned correctly, and removed the shape once satisfied. I used individual layers for each line of text, making it simple to move and alter the size of the text. Once each was in its right place, I add the outer glow effect to pull the image out of the page as well as using two contrasting colours, in this case black for text and white for the outer glow.
- For the next step, I began to work on the additional layers of text, the title, year and date and a line in attempt to draw and potential attendants in, all of which I produced in a similar way. For the texts, I used duplicated layers in order to provide these layers with a 3D effect, once again using two contrasting colours. In addition to this, I modified the opacity of the top layers of the event title and year to aid the visual of depth. Finally on the each text layer in this section, excluding the title, I again used the outer glow to help make the layers stand out of the page.
- After looking back at the final print design and comparing it to our brief, I think the product is successful as from a distance, the images is visually pleasing as well as it 'stands out' thus it would lead people to want to find out more about the poster. In addition, all the text is clearly visible and the title and dates of the event are some main focus points of the poster.
- A few improvements I think could have been made to the image, could have been to more the image to a more central position along with the line-up, but also to incorporate some way of leading the viewers eyes around the page, as well as increasing the size of text for the artists to ensure they are not overwhelmed by any of the other text. When creating any print in the future, I will try and get feedback for a number of people in order to ensure the image is appealing to a wider audience, and is legible.
